Gear from either PVP and PVE vendors can make protection-holy paladins quite effective in PVP. The resilience points lost by using PVE gear is made up by the set bonuses.

The prot holy paladin has amazing survivability in World of Warcraft battlegrounds and arena PVP with the right gear. Fortunately, there is a lot of gear available that makes prot healing viable.

The paladin plate healing sets should be used exclusively. No retribution or tanking pieces should be used while doing PVP as prot . Although ardent defender utilizes the defense stat for its healing effect, the effect is so small without tanking gear that neither tanking gear nor tanking stat enhancement should be used.

Arena Points for PVP Gear

It is not possible to get all of the best PVP gear without arena points. In particular, WoW PVP players who refuse to participate in an arena team do not have access to PVP weapons, shields and librams. Those items are not available at all via the honor vendors. A prot holy paladin who does not do arena for a Flash of Light libram will have to use a level 70 libram from Burning Crusade such as the Blessed Book of Nagrand or Karazhan's Libram of Souls Redeemed which are both inferior to the current PVP arena libram.

The armor gear from the arena vendors also has better stats than the honor gear. Keep in mind that many arena pieces also have a minimum arena rating requirement before purchase. This means players have to perform well in arena as well.

PVE Tier 8.5

Many World of Warcraft PVP players do not like to PVE. However, the very best players suck it up and raid anyway to get the very best gear, which are often not available from the arena vendor. Those that refuse to participate in arena can use PVE to get weapons and librams as well. Although PVE weapons and librams are not as good as their PVP counterparts, the PVE gear does not require neither arena participation nor a high arena rating.

The four piece holy paladin tier 8.5 set provides a huge four piece bonus with sacred shield activating every four seconds instead of the normal six seconds. With high spell power, sacred shield can absorb around 3000 damage per four seconds instead of six. Two seconds of less cooldown makes a huge difference in survivability. However, the trade-off is a little over 300 resilience between the PVE and PVP pieces. That 300 resilience lost will hurt against DPS that can burst such as from a mage or moonkin but that can be mitigated by sacred shield.

Spellpower and Stamina

The best stats for gems and enchants are spellpower and stamina, followed by critical rating. Because the Flash of Light HOT can crit as well, it is possible to get over 10k crit heals from just the HOT as well as the initial Flash of Light. If Blizzard decides to nerf this spec as part of the changes before WoW arena season 7, the size of the Flash of Light will probably be reduced significantly.

There are many choices in acquiring gear for prot holy paladins. No matter the gear mix, prot holy pallies are very competitive in World of Warcraft PVP once the riught gear has been acquired.
