Paladins can be one of the hardest classes to beat in player versus player (PvP) combat in World of Warcraft. It is not because paladins do the most damage, they have good armor, or that they are capable of healing themselves, but it is rather a combination of all these factors. Although this class can be played in a manner similar to the warrior in groups and PvP settings, the additional abilities of the paladin class give it extra longevity in arenas and battlegrounds.
The strategies a paladin uses in PvP situations vary depending on his or her specialization. There are a few things all paladins can keep in mind to increase their effectiveness in arenas and battlegrounds in World of Warcraft. The intent of this guide is to give a player a starting point, not to be a comprehensive list of strategies a paladin can use against every class in the game.
The healing abilities of the paladin are useful in all situations, groups, PvP and solo, but something that can be used differently to good effect in PvP is the spell divine shield. While it is used to prevent the deaths of others in instances and raids, divine shield can be used to give the paladin time to heal his teammates and prevent the need for resurrections. Because this spell makes the paladin invulnerable, it has the downside that opposing players may focus on someone else other than the paladin if he uses the spell on himself.
Blessings are group buffs that are unique to the paladin. In some ways, paladin blessings are like shaman totems. Some blessings, such as Blessing of Might and Blessing of Wisdom serve the same function in PvP situations as they do in other areas of the game.
Blessing of Freedom is perhaps the most useful PvP ability for paladins as it negates many movement impairing effects, giving the paladin and his teammates more time to escape. This is especially useful in battlegrounds where the goal is to capture the opponents flags.
A protection paladin will use roughly the same tactics as a retribution paladin, although the protection paladin will do less damage. Characters who have specialized in the holy branch of the talent tree will be called upon as healers and more of their damage will come from holy spells.
Naturally, the retribution aura will benefit retribution paladins the most in PvP, but the added damage that the aura does when each member is hit can give a battleground or arena group an edge. Regardless of which branch of the talent tree a paladin has spent the most points in, the paladin should use his defensive and offensive capabilities to keep himself alive as long as possible. His high hit point total, along with his healing capabilities make him a potent PvP force.
