If you are new to World of Warcraft, then picking a race and character with the proper stats is a good idea.

To choose the best character for you, you have to understand how stats work for and against your character.

Stats Overview

Your starting stats affect you character’s career. For example, here is a chart of some of the starting stats for all of the World of Warcraft (WOW) warrior races, as well as armor ratings. Remember that these stats will change throughout your career, and the shortcomings of a race can be fixed by your choice of armor and weapons. Warriors rely on strength, stamina, and armor most. It seems that if you want a good warrior in World of Warcraft you would choose the Night Elf, Troll, or Human because they have a good amount of what is needed overall.

(The Blood Elf is not included because they cannot be warriors.)

Building Your Character From Starting Stats

Since we already looked at warrior starter stats, we'll look at warriors more in-depth.

Strength and stamina are what warriors rely on most. Before deciding on a character though, take a look at how much armor rating is attributed to each race. Armor rating protects your character when in combat. In most cases, the larger extra armor rating is because the character starts off with a shield, while the lower ratings do not.

What do all these stats mean, though? If you are confused, don’t worry. Each stat is explained below.

  • Strength- Strength is the most important stat for a warrior. It increases your character’s attack power and affects the overall damage output for melee weapons. It also determines how much damage you block if using a shield.
  • Agility- Agility improves your armor rating, how well you can dodge an attack, and your chance to deal a critical hit with a melee weapon. This stat is a secondary stat for warriors but is used a lot by rogues and hunters.
  • Stamina- This stat affects your health, also known as hit points, and is especially important to warriors because they are made to absorb damage. Having more stamina allows you to take more hits without dying.
  • Intelligence- Intelligence is not used by warriors because it deals with improving mana reserves, but spell casters and hunters use it.
  • Spirit- This stat helps with the regeneration of health. The higher the spirit, the faster your health will regenerate. For the most part, warriors and hunters don’t have to worry about spirit. The amount you get from leveling your character will be sufficient. Priests rely on a large amount of spirit.

As you build your character you will want to build upon the stats that your character uses. This article has already looked at the warrior, so let’s take a look at the hunter, for example. A hunter uses mostly agility and stamina, so you would want to pick a race that has a lot of this right out of the gate, and work to get more with your choice of armor and weapons throughout your career.

Building a World of Warcraft character that is powerful and works well in a group isn’t hard, it just takes thought.
