World of Warcraft Classes – The Mage

Background Information on the WoW Ranged DPS Class

Feb 10, 2009 Kevin Hickson

The WoW Mage rains destruction down on her enemies using control of frost, fire and arcane magic. Useful in raids and parties, the Mage is indispensible in WoW.

There are very few classes in WoW capable of unleashing such high DPS in such a short amount of time as the Mage. Using the powers of Frost, Fire and Arcane magic, Mages stand comfortably back from the fray and decimate their enemies. Mages can focus on direct damage, area of effect (AoE), and crowd control to aid their party or raid group.

WoW Mage Talent Specs – Frost, Fire and Arcane

The Mage’s Frost talent tree is easily the most useful for solo leveling, as it gives the Mage crowd control abilities and excellent burst damage capabilities. Talents in the Frost tree can increase the range of frost spells, improve the slowing effects of Frost spells, and even summon a water elemental to aid the party during battle. Highlights of the Frost tree include Ice Shards (increases critical strike damage of Frost spells 100% with 3 points) and Shatter (increases critical strike chance of all spells against frozen targets by 50% with 3 points).

The Fire tree is mainly a damage (DPS) increasing tree for the Mage in World of Warcraft. For Characters who would like to do as much damage as possible against a single target - or nuke, as it were - the Fire tree will be the most useful. Fire talents can increase the range of fire spells, increase the critical strike chance and damage, and even gain a chance of stunning the target. Highlights of the Mage’s Fire tree in WoW include Flame Throwing (increases the range of fire spells by 6 yards with 2 points) and Playing with Fire (increases all spell damage caused and taken by 3% with 3 points).

The Mage’s Arcane talent tree is a utility tree, focusing on increasing the durability and survivability of the Mage in World of Warcraft. Spells in the Arcane tree can increase mana regeneration, increase the total intellect of the Mage, or increase overall spell power. Highlights of the WoW Mage’s Arcane talent tree include Arcane Meditation (allows 30% mana regeneration to continue while casting with 3 points) and Arcane Instability (increases damage and critical strike chance of spells by 3% with 3 points).

The Mage and their role in WoW – DPS

The World of Warcraft Mage is a ranged damage dealer, plain and simple. As such, their role is relatively simple – they drastically improve the DPS of groups and raids. Mages tend to be difficult to play solo, especially at higher levels because they have low armor and hit points. In a group setting however, a Mage can truly shine. They provide conjured food and water for their allies, and bring destruction to their enemies quickly and efficiently. The WoW Mage is an entertaining and useful class in the World of Warcraft.
