World of Warcraft Class Guide

How to Choose Which Class To Play in WoW

Oct 19, 2009 Tamara Baribeau

World of Warcraft (or WoW) has 10 unique classes to choose from, and the choice can be very difficult. Each class plays differently and provides a different experience.

Regardless if a player wants to heal, cast damaging spells, slice with swords, shoot arrow from a bow, tank the enemies, or control with immobilizing spells, there is a class for them in World of Warcraft.

Melee Classes

Warriors - Warriors are the primary tanking class, able to withstand massive amounts of damage through mitigation and hold the aggro of the enemies in the game. They are also able to spec for damage, with the ability to deal large amounts of damage. They do not cast spells and are strictly melee. They are great for someone who likes to be in the heat of the battle and lead groups or raids.

Rogues - Rogues are the sneaky thief class in WoW. They are able to stealth and sneak around in order to ambush and backstab enemies. They can pick locks and pickpocket, and have the ability to sprint to move fast. They have powerful melee damage abilities and can dual wield weapons. They are a leather wearing class that uses poison to increase their damage.

Death Knight - The Death Knight is the newest class, and is a plate wearing melee class. They are a dark class with many spells that can do damage in a variety of ways. They have a unique spell mechanic with their runic power system that takes some time to master. They can tank or provide melee damage and are a fun class to play.

Ranged Classes

Mages - The World of Warcraft mage is a cloth-wearing, damage dealing class. They stand back from the heat of battle and cast spells into the fight. They have large damage-dealing spells and also have the ability to crowd control and turn mobs into sheep to immobilize them. They also have utility abilities such as the power to summon food and drink and teleport themselves and other players.

Warlocks - Warlocks are similar to Mages in that they wear cloth and cast damaging spells. They are predominantly a pet class, however, and require their pet to be around to produce maximum damage. They also have the ability to summon other players. Their soulstone ability brings back others from the dead. They use demonic darker powers, which is another differentiator from mages who are elemental and arcane.

Hunters - Hunters are the rangers of World of Warcraft, with the ability to shoot arrows from a bow or bullets from a gun. They are also able to hold swords to do close range melee attacks. Hunters tame pets in the world and teach them to do their bidding while caring for them and growing their relationship. They have a variety of tricks such as feign death and traps.

Support and Hybrid Classes

Druids - Druids are a "jack-of-all-trades" class, able to adapt to most any situation. Their unique claim to fame is the ability to shapeshift into other forms, enabling them to fulfill other roles. Druids are able to heal in tree form, melee attack and sneak as a rogue in cat form, run fast in cheetah form, tank like a warrior in bear form and cast damaging spells as a moonkin.

Priests - Priests are the holy healing class, and are the best healers in the game. They also have the ability to spec their talents to be shadow priests, which can produce high amounts of shadow magic damage. Priests have limited crowd control ability with their Shackle Undead spell, and have powerful shields to absorb damage. Priests are popular in raids for their large heals and ability to resurrect other players.

Paladins - Paladins are another hybrid class, and can assume different roles depending how they spec their talents. Paladins can be tanks, healers, or melee damage dealers. They are a plate wearing holy class with the ability to stun others. They also have powerful buffs that can bolster the strengths of their group or raid. They are an asset to any group, and are one of the easier classes to play.

Shaman - Shaman are a spiritual hybrid class that can provide ranged or melee damage or healing for their group. They are a chain wearing class and summon a variety of totems to perform their abilities. They are another "jack-of-all-trades" class and are good for someone who likes to alternate between melee, ranged, and healing.

Regardless of a player's style of play and personality, there is a class in World of Warcraft that will fit them. For a beginner, the easiest classes to learn are the Hunter, Paladin, and Rogue. New players should try playing a few different classes to around level 10 to determine if it is right for them.
