Wins in World of Warcraft's EOTS Come From Holding Towers

Although many WoW PVP players go for the flag when trying to win Eye of the Storm, the best strategy is to hold three or more towers rather than go for the flag.

World of Warcraft's Eye of the Storm (EOTS) battleground is a game where each side tries to reach 1600 points the fastest. The map consists of four towers and a flag that is spawned in the middle of the battlefield. Points are earned for holding the towers and by capturing the flag.

Unfortunately, too many WoW PVP players focus too much attention on capturing multiple flags rather than holding towers. The scoring system favors a strategy that involves holding three or more of the towers instead of trying to fight for the flag.

EotS Scoring System

According to wowwiki, the scoring system is as follows.

Towers controlled:

  • 1 tower controlled = 1 point earned per second
  • 2 towers controlled = 2 points earned per second
  • 3 towers controlled = 5 points earned per second
  • 4 towers controlled = 10 points earned per second

Flag captures:

  • flag capture with 1 tower controlled = 75 points
  • flag capture with 2 towers controlled = 85 points
  • flag capture with 3 towers controlled = 105 points
  • flag capture with 4 towers controlled = 500 points

Winning Eye of the Storm

There are two main strategies to winning EOTS.

The first strategy involves holding two towers and capturing the flag. The winner will be the team that captures the most flags since both teams have nearly an equal amount of points earned from holding towers. If the players on the team are doing a good job at capturing more flags than the opponent, then a win should result. If not, another strategy needs to be pursued instead. The advantage of this strategy is that it avoids having the players spread to thin across the map.

The second strategy involves trying to capture and hold three or more towers. In one minute, 120 points are gained from holding two towers while 300 points are earned from holding three towers. Considering flag captures are usually only 75-105 points, wins in EOTS are much faster with a bigger margin of victory by holding three towers.

If a team manages to control three towers and has possession of the flag, the flag carrier should not capture the flag. Rather, the flag carrier should stand at the furthest tower from the enemy's remaining tower, thus depriving the opportunity for the opponent to gain points from a new flag being respawned in the center of the map.

With the three tower strategy, the team concentrates solely on defending three towers without worrying about the flag.. Because the point gain per minute from controlling 3 towers is so high, getting to 1600 points first is quicker and provides little opportunity for the opponent to make up the difference. Because the point gain from capturing the flag with only one tower is so small, it is safe to let the enemy continuously capture the flag if they only hold one tower.

If WoW players in EOTS can convince other teammates to go for three towers instead of the flag, victory is almost always assured along with more bonus honor and more EOTS marks. Chatting with fellow players during the preparation phase of EOTS about the three tower strategy is the key to victory.
