Warsong Gulch was one of the very first battlegrounds to appear within World of Warcraft. As such, players have had a long time to distill their strategies and figure out what will work and what will not. Although WSG and many of the other battlegrounds come down to a question of numbers, there are definitely some things to keep in mind that will help bring the flag back home.
Understanding Teamwork
The concept of teamwork is immensely important when battling in Azeroth. All of Blizzard's classes in World of Warcraft have advantages and disadvantages. It's up to each player to ensure they make the most of their best points, especially when it comes to battlegrounds.
- Classes with a lot of health, such a Feral druids or Protection warriors will excel in holding up opponents and delaying battles. Take note of these characters and follow them in battle - when other players concentrate fire upon them, it's a perfect opportunity to strike!
- Healing classes are few and far between in battegrounds. When playing one, or being lucky enough to find one, protection is key! Either ensure that healer is not focus-fired or stay away from situations that are dangerous for healers.
- The point of WSG is to capture the flag. Some classes (such as druids, rogues and paladins) can be excellent flag carriers. When running with someone who has the flag, use every ability possible to slow down attackers and allow the runner to escape! Warriors and Hunters can use their snares or traps to great affect in this situation.
Capture the Flag
Of course, the only way to win a WSG battleground is to capture the flag three times. As both teams can attempt to get the flag at the same time, often both teams will end up holding onto the opposing team's flag.
- When attempting to track down the flag, keep an eye on the minimap. This can be accessed by shift-left-clicking on the Battlegrounds Icon. The flag will appear on the map.
- Each flag leaves a trail of colour on the ground. This can be very useful for figuring out which way an enemy has gone.
- Communicate with teammates via chat to let them know where the flag carrier has gone.
- Keep in mind that the opposing team may be hiding their flag in their own flag room or on the roof of their base. It will likely take more than a solo effort to kill that flag-carrier.
Mid-Field Play
One of the more important concepts in WSG is holding onto dominance within the centre of the map. If a side (either Horde or Alliance) can gain and keep control of the centre, it will be easier for both the flag carrier to run through, and the offense to keep the other players pinned down.
- Stay with teammates to maximize numbers.
- Try not to run head-first into trouble. The best strategy after re-spawning is to try and link up directly with another teammate.
- Dropping back and regrouping is always going to be preferable to dying and respawning.
- Try and use the few seconds of free spell-casting after spawn to help others. Priests can definitely make a difference with stamina boosts.
Warsong Gulch can occasionally be a frustrating battleground to play. As with any game, patience will pay off. Be sure to think about the situation before running in and the difference made will be noticable. Keep these hints and tips in mind and hopefully, many of your rounds within WSG will result in victory!
