Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron is a free to play massive multi-player role-playing game which has eleven unique classes to play.

In Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (DDO), which is developed by Turbine, Inc., players have the ability to choose between eleven unique classes that fill a variety of roles. Every class has its own purpose and excels in different situations, so no class should be thought of as "worthless".

The Sorcerer Class of Dungeons and Dragons Online

Spell characters are typically ones that fight at a long ranged with their magical abilities. These characters rely on spell points to cast their spells. Spells points can be replenished by resting at a town or inn, using a potion, or using a rest shrine. Spell characters typically lack a good strength and defense, so they do not excel at close ranged combat. One of these spell classes is the sorcerer.

The sorcerer is described by DDO as "Sorcerers are born with the ability to use powerful magic. They have fewer spells than wizards but can cast much faster and more often."

This means that sorcerers, unlike wizards, start with the knowledge of their spells and cannot learn more by inscribing scrolls. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot change their spells at rest shrines or inns. In order to change the spells that a sorcerer knows, the player must go to their class trainer and pay a gold amount. (The player can only do this every three days.)

The sorcerer class has more spell points than the wizard, which leads to it being able to cast spells more often. Sorcerers also gain higher bonus spell points from magic items than any of the other classes.

Sorcerer characters typically fight at longed-ranged. In combat, they may cast the spells that they know, as many times as the player wishes, until the character runs out of spell points. Each spell costs a certain number of spell points to cast. Sorcerers are highly adaptable with the spells they can use. The effects of their magics do things such as summoning a beam of ice, controlling a monster, summoning a creature to aid them, and even opening locks or doors (the rogue and wizard are the only other classes that can do this.)

Every time that a sorcerer character levels up, the player will be able to pick new spells to fit whatever their preferred playing style is. The player will not need to conform themselves to playing a certain way. And, as if players didn't have enough choices with the number of spells to pick from, every time a character's rank improves, players will be able to pick from a number of enhancements that make their magic stronger. A complete list of spells, feats, and enhancements can be found here: http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Class:Sorcerer

Basic Stat Points of a Sorcerer

(Please note that these stats are based on the recommended path for the class, by DDO. Depending on which path the player picks, or if they customize their path, the stats will change.)

A level 1 sorcerer's stats are as follows:

  • 8 STR (Strength affects the chance to hit and how much damage is done. This stat is not important for a sorcerer, as a sorcerer doesn't fight in melee combat.)
  • 14 DEX (Dexterity affects armor class and reflex saves. Because sorcerers can't use most armors, this trait is important.)
  • 14 CON (Constitution affects the total health points a character has and their fortitude saves.)
  • 8 INT (Intelligence has no effect for sorcerers, unless it is with a multi-class skill.)
  • 8 WIS (Wisdom has no effect for sorcerers, unless it is with a multi-class skill.)
  • 18 CHA (Charisma is the most important stat for a sorcerer. It affects spell access, total spell points, and spell power.)

Is the Sorcerer a Good Class?

The Sorcerer can be an extremely good class, depending on what type of a magic using character the player wishes to play. The sorcerer is most comparable to the wizard class, as the spells each class can cast from the same schools of magic.

Sorcerers should avoid close-hand combat, as, due to their low armor class and moderate constitution, they're quite squishy in battle. Sorcerers do not have to micro-manage their use of spell points as much as the wizard, due to the higher amount of spell points that the sorcerer possess. The sorcerer is highly recommended for a group if the group has no wizard, and even then it is a good addition to most groups because of the adaptability of the sorcerer.
