Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron is a free to play massive multi-player role-playing game which has eleven unique classes to play.

In Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (DDO), which is developed by Turbine, Inc., players have the ability to choose between eleven unique classes that fill a variety of roles. Every class has its own purpose and excels in different situations, so no class should be thought of as "worthless".

The Paladin Class of Dungeons and Dragons Online

Melee classes typically fight in close-hand combat and have little in the means of magic spells. They possess a high constitution, which gives them a large amount of life. Most melee classes also have a high strength and defense, which makes them an effective tanking character. Due to these attributes, the solo-ability of melee characters is fairly high. The paladin is one of these melee classes.

Paladins are described by DDO as "Paladins are extremely resilient and have a good balance of offense and defense. They protect and support allies better than the other melee classes, provide some healing, and wield the power of good as a mighty weapon."

When DDO says that Paladins have a good balance of offense and defense it really means it. Paladins are excellent melee fighters, and have the abilities to make themselves useful in battle. Paladins can also wear heavy armors and gain access to healing spells, which makes them very effecting at taking on their targets (as when they take damage they can heal.) Besides their ability to function well in combat alone, Paladins also have abilities that affect the characters around them. These do things such as lowering the damage that evil creatures do to nearby characters and the Paladin. A full list of paladin spells, feats, and enhancements can be found here:

Paladins are extremely useful in the first few dungeons of the game, where players must fight hordes of undead creatures. Paladins have the ability to do extra damage to evil creatures and have the ability to turn undead, which gives them the ability to easily slay any of the undead they come across. Paladins are also immune to certain status effects, such as disease, which can also very useful.

Basic Stat Points of a Paladin

(Please note that these stats are based on the recommended path for the class, by DDO. Depending on which path the player picks, or if they customize their path, the stats will change.)

A level 1 Paladin's stats are as follows:

  • 16 STR (Strength raises the chance to hit and the damage done. This is an important stat for a paladin.)
  • 10 DEX (Dexterity affects armor class and reflex roles.)
  • 12 CON (Constitution affects how many health points a character gets and their fortitude saves. This skill is important for a paladin, as they fight in close-hand combat.)
  • 8 INT (Intelligence has no effect for paladins, unless it is with a multi-class skill.)
  • 14 WIS (Wisdom affects will saves. It also spell points, spell access, and spell power for paladins. This is especially important for paladins that want to use their spells, come level 4.)
  • 14 CHA (Charisma affects the turning ability for paladins, which does large damage against undead.)

Is the Paladin a Good Class?

Depending on the player, the paladin can be a good class. It cannot be played purely as a tank, because it doesn't have a wide variety of defensive skills, like the fighter does. Instead, it should be thought of a damage dealer who can live longer, because of the paladin's ability to heal. The paladin can be especially helpful to party members because of its healing ability, lay on hands, its spells, and the auras it can project.
