The Monk Class of DDO Eberron Unlimited

Dungeons and Dragons Online a Free MMORPG

Sep 21, 2009 Michael Fuchs

Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron is a free to play massive multi-player role-playing game which has eleven unique classes to play.

In Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (DDO), which is developed by Turbine, Inc., players have the ability to choose between eleven unique classes that fill a variety of roles. Every class has its own purpose and excels in different situations, so no class should be thought of as "worthless".

The Monk Class of Dungeons and Dragons Online

Melee classes typically fight in close-hand combat and have little in the means of magic spells. They possess a high constitution, which gives them a large amount of life. Most melee classes also have a high strength and defense, which makes them an effective tanking character. Due to these attributes, the solo-ability of melee characters is fairly high. The Monk class is slightly different than most melee classes, but nonetheless should still be considered to be one.

Monks are described by DDO as "Monks use an energy called Ki to perform amazing techniques in battle. Usually fighting without weapons or armor, they can assist allies or destroy enemies but take longer to master than the other melee classes."

Monks are different than the other melee classes in the fact that they use no weapons or armor, as DDO states. In order to use Ki (a spiritual energy that allows monks to use abilities, which are similar to spells), a monk must remain centered. In order to remain centered, a monk cannot wear armor and must also remain unarmed or use weapons such as staffs or Kamas. An unarmed monk can equip hand wraps as their weapon. Also, to use most monk abilities the monk must be unarmed, so that path is recommended for a beginning monk.

The abilities that a monk possesses are similar to spells, in the way that they cost a set amount of Ki to use. Monk skills include punches that cause elemental damage, skills to cure allies afflictions (such as blindness), or even special "finish moves". Finish moves are done with the monk skill of the same name. The button, to low level monks, will look as if it does nothing. But, when a monk does an "elemental combo", the button will change to a special attack. These finishing moves include things such as healing nearby allies, breathing a cone of fire, and more.

The true ability of the monk's playing style shines through with their enhancements. Monk enhancements allow the monks to learn new moves and to focus their path. For instance, at level two a monk gets to pick with animal path they follow. These enhancements raise certain aspects of the monk's ability, such as their power, constitution, or their Ki regeneration. Monks also are granted a wide variety of stances to use through the paths they chose, and can further customize the playing style that the player uses. Basic Stat Points of a Monk

(Please note that these stats are based on the recommended path for the class, by DDO. Depending on which path the player picks, or if they customize their path, the stats will change.)

A level 1 Monk's stats are as follows:

  • 16 STR (Strength affects the chance to hit and the damage done. It is highly important for a monk, as monks fight with their first or weapons during combat.)
  • 14 DEX (Dexterity affects armor class, reflex saves, and the chance to hit with a ranged weapon. Because a monk cannot wear almost all armors, this trait is also highly important. Also, a monk can use shurikens if he/she wishes to.)
  • 14 CON (Constitution affects the total amount of health points a character has. It also affects fortitude saves. This stat is important to monks because they fight in close combat and have a low armor class. Even though there are quite a few monk abilities that add constitution, this stat should not be skipped out on.)
  • 8 INT (Intelligence has little to no effect for a monk.)
  • 14 WIS (Wisdom affects Will saves and the power of some monk abilities. It can be important, depending on what type of monk the player wishes to play.)
  • 8 CHA (Charisma has little to no effect for a monk.)

Is the Monk a Good Class?

The monk is an excellent class. It has many abilities to make it function and work in different situations. Beginning players will find the novice dungeons challenging, as they will not have the skills to solo the dungeon by themselves depending on what they pick for their enhancements and feats.

Also, the monk is not recommended for those players that wish to play a full on tank character. Monk players must think through their strategy of attack and make their attacks flow. Then, in order to be fully functional, that monk character must also get a hang of dodge attacks by rolling, so that they don't sustain a large amount of damage. Once players get the hang of this, though, a monk is a fun and rewarding class to play.

The monk class is a class players must pay for to use. But, if players are looking for a fun new class to play, the monk is definitely worth the money!
