Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron is a free to play massive multi-player role-playing game which has eleven unique classes to play.

In Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (DDO), which is developed by Turbine, Inc., players have the ability to choose between eleven unique classes that fill a variety of roles. Every class has its own purpose and excels in different situations, so no class should be thought of as "worthless".

The Cleric Class of Dungeons and Dragons Online

Spell characters are typically ones that fight at a long ranged with their magical abilities. These characters rely on spell points to cast their spells. Spells points can be replenished by resting at a town or inn, using a potion, or using a rest shrine. Spell characters typically lack a good strength and defense, so they do not excel at close ranged combat. One of these spell classes is the cleric.

Clerics are described by DDO as "Divine spells casters and healers, clerics have a broad range of spells at their command. They excel at curing ailments and healing allies but also have the ability to blast enemies with their divine power."

One of the greatest advantages to playing a cleric, over the other spell classes, is that they can use all of the armors in the game and can also use shields. This allows them to live longer in battle, whereas the other spell characters can be quite "squishy". Another trait that clerics possess to help them live in battle is the ability to heal wounds.

Clerics should not be thought of as stereotypical healer type characters. Clerics can take that path, if they wish, but a cleric can also become much more. Because of the ability to wear all the armors in the game, clerics can become a holy warrior that fights in melee combat, but with a focus on healing. Thus, this makes clerics similar to the paladin, except that paladins focus on combat, whereas clerics focus on healing. Another advantage to clerics is that they can change out their spells at an inn or rest shrine, like the wizard. Clerics also gain all their spells as they level up, so they won't need to inscribe scrolls like a wizard or pick a subset like the favored soul.

Most of the cleric spells focus on curing or afflicting status ailments or curing wounds. But, as the cleric levels up, they gain access to a variety of spells that deal damage. Luckily, for the cleric, at level 1 they have access to the Summon Monster I. This means that if the cleric wishes to become a healer, they should be able to survive without a party, at least for a while (if they wish.) The cleric’s solo-ability is also quite good during the first few levels, on Korthos Island, as a lot of the monsters are undead. Basic Stat Points of a Cleric

(Please note that these stats are based on the recommended path for the class, by DDO. Depending on which path the player picks, or if they customize their path, the stats will change.)

  • 12 STR (Strength is important for a cleric that wishes to fight with melee weapons and spells. But, for a cleric that only wishes to use magic, this is not important. Strength affects that chance to hit and how much damage is done.)
  • 10 DEX (Dexterity affects armors class and reflex saves. It is important for a cleric that wishes to fight in melee combat.)
  • 12 CON (Constitution affects fortitude saves and how many health points a character has.)
  • 8 INT (Intelligence is not important to a cleric, unless it is with a multi-class ability.)
  • 18 WIS (Wisdom is the most important stat for a cleric. It affects spell access, the number of spell points, and spell power.)
  • 10 CHA (Charisma affects the cleric's turn undead ability.)

Is the Cleric a Good Class?

The cleric is an excellent class and is needed in most parties, because of their ability to heal. Clerics have an excellent dungeon solo-ability, because of the fact that they can both fight and cast spells. Players who worry that a cleric only spends their time healing other players need not worry, as that isn't the case. Players who wish to play a cleric should be expecting to play a holy warrior, whose emphasis is on spells.
