Commandos may not get all the glory, but they are one of the most fun classes to play in Sony Online Entertainment's space fantasy mmorpg.
Jedis, Smugglers, and Bounty Hunters help give players of Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies the experience of the Star Wars Universe, but the galactic civil war demands that players be given the option to play military characters as well. Players who enjoy demolitions and dealing with heavy weapons should consider joining the elite commando class.
Raising a commando's combat level in Star Wars Galaxies is much the same as it is with other classes. Knowing about aggro control and mastering experience grinding are important aspects of any mmorpg, but that does not tell the player how to sxpend his expertise point to make the best commando to suit his playstyle.
The two main areas that commandos focus on are demolitions and heavy weapons. A Commando can choose to be one specialize in heavy weapons or demolitions. These will effect how he chooses to increase his combat level, and if he chooses to do so, how he engages in player versus player combat.
A Commando that specializes in heavy weapons combat in Star Wars Galaxies needs to keep an eye on the weapons he chooses and make sure his ranged skills stay sharp. The commando that chooses to specialize in demolitions requires more planning to take out the heavy machinery such as AT-ATs and AT-STs that roam the planets of the Star Wars universe.
Every commando, whether he is specialized in assualt or demolitions, should pick up these expertises to help with their effectiveness in Star Wars Galaxies (the list is taken from Benett's):
Han Solo may have said that nothing beats a good blaster at an individual's side, but the rocket launcher is an acceptable alternative in Star Wars Galaxies.
Heavy weapons may be the fun for some players, but other players would prefer to play their commandos in a style that requires a little more prepration. Fortunately, the programmers and designers of Star Wars Galaxies have taken this into consideration and have given players the option of making their character assault commandos.
While it is not strictly necessary for a player of this class to carry a heavy weapon as his choice in Player versus Environment and Player Versus Player combat, many people who enjoy playing the class feel that carrying one is essential for the true experience. Commandos may not get the glory that the other combat classes do, but the heavy weapons class is. Without the classes geared towards the Empire and the Rebellion's military, Star Wars Galaxies would not be able to capture the look and feel of the time period portrayed in the original movie trilogy.
