Droids and structures are part of the Star Wars Galaxies Universe, but Jump to Light Speed gave players the options of piloting and more importantly creating their own ships. Sure, it may be cool to be an X-Wing pilot or a Tie fighter pilot, but the real money is in making these craft for other players to use.
In order to make ships and ship parts, a player must have a trader character and the trader character must spend his expertise points on structures and then further specialize in being a shipwright, but this is not an obstacle for the truly dedicated player. A shipwright can figure out new schematics through a process known as ship engineering.
The information used to create this guide is several years old and may not incorporate changes that have been made to the game. General crafting experience is no longer needed as mentioned above, but a player must still gain experience in order to purchase the expertise points needed to advance.
Shipwright is one of the expertise trees available in for structures trader, the other is architecture. Once a structures trader goes down the path of the shipwright, he should be warned that it will forever dominate his destiny.
Before letting building ships dominate your destiny in a way that the dark side of the force never could in Star Wars Galaxies, a player must invest in the wright equipment and the materials. This also means that from time to time he must head into space and get the parts for reverse engineering. Factories will help mass produce the ships to players, but while these are easily fixed and easy to maintain, the true power comes only from prototypes.
It would be nice to make a neat list of what to make, but the process of building star fighters is only slightly less complex than the process of building airplanes in the real world. The core components are weapons, armor, hit points, droid interfaces, energy boosters, and of course engines. These require gas, power, metal, and minerals to make the crafting, but once these are made and the schematics have been drawn, making a star fighter is just a process of putting the goods in the crafting station.
A shipwright trader should consider being a pilot also, as he can earn the loot necessary to make the grinding process easier. If he receives a starship part as loot or if another Star Wars Galaxies character is willing to provide him the parts, he can work his way up and design an even better version of the X-Wing. Taking the lucky shot that can destroy a Death Star, however, is a different skill.
