The Left 4 Dead Survivor Pack DLC will feature a brand-new Survivor Mode for PC and XBox 360, along with unlocking Death Toll and Dead Air for Versus mode on XBox 360.

According to the Left 4 Dead Blog, the Survivor Pack DLC will be available for free download on both XBox 360 and PC on April 21.

The Survivor Pack will contain a new Survivor mode, will unlock the the Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns for Versus mode, and will feature some slight gameplay alterations for Versus mode.

Survivor Mode in Left 4 Dead

Survivor mode will pit all four survivors in a small, enclosed area, forcing them to battle infected hordes for as long as they can survive. Unlike other modes of play, the survivor mode will be less restrictive on special infected, resulting in more variation and challenge in the attacks. The infected will never stop charging until every last survivor is dead.

Ironically, there is no "surviving" the "Survivor" mode--players must merely fight for as long as possible to achieve a high score.

While other modes of play take a long time to complete, the Survivor mode is designed for quick-play sessions; players are not expected to survive more than 10 minutes per round. An all new map called "Lighthouse" will be featured specifically for the Survivor mode. A video preview of the Survivor mode and Lighthouse level can be viewed at IGN.

Dead Air and Death Toll in Versus

Dead Air and Death Toll, previously only available for play in single-player and co-op modes, will now be playable in Versus. The two campaigns were left out of Versus mode in the initial release purportedly because of balancing issues, which needed more time for tweaking. However, cynical fans claimed the content was withheld to boost sales at a later date with a free download.

Regardless, the two campaigns should provide fresh Versus mode gameplay for competitive gamers who have grown tired of tearing survivors to shreds on the initial campaigns--No Mercy and Blood Harvest.

Gameplay Alterations

Aside from "exploit fixes and versus balancing," the primary gameplay alteration will involve survivor melee attacking.

Many fans complained survivor melee attacks were simply too powerful. By swinging a gun over and over again like a baseball bat, survivors could bat away mobs of infected monsters without even getting scratched.

This new update--already available on PC--will limit melee swings, forcing players to use the attack more strategically.

The new DLC's April 21 release date will coincide with a retail release of Left 4 Dead: Critic's Choice Edition, which will feature Left 4 Dead and the Survivor Pack in one package. Valve plans for more DLC in the future, but exact plans are yet to be revealed.
