(Lil) Farm Life competes with Farm Town and Farmville

Sep 3, 2009 Judith Bakley

Though the oldest of the three farming games, is (Lil) Farm Life better than Farm Town and Farmville? Play all three to find out.

Surprisingly another farming game is available on facebook.com called (Lil) Farm Life. How does it compare to Farm Town and Farmville? It seems to be in the middle of the two. It is cartoony like Farmville, but it has more store options like Farm Town.

One of the better aspects of Farm Life is that the avatar is more customizable. He/she does not have to be stuck with the same jumper as on Farm Town and Farmville. The avatar on Farm Life is actually the cutest of all three games (see screenshot), and she even blinks.

Neighbors are NOT Needed for Advancement in Farm Life!

One noteworthy aspect of (Lil) Farm Life is that neighbors are not required for advancement, which is a constant irritation on the other two games. As soon as level 5 is achieved on Farm Life, more land can be purchased for only 10,000 coins. This is by far the cheapest and best option of all three games.

A much higher level and more than double the coins is required on Farm Town, and at least 8 neighbors are needed on Farmville. Either that or 20 FV cash, and it’s still unclear how to earn those (other than paying for them).

Old McDonald Had a Farm

It seems to take longer to load Farm Life than it does the other two games, and it takes longer to harvest and plow each plot. This lapse is frustrating and time consuming. The music isn’t as bad as on the other games and is the familiar “Old McDonald Had a Farm”.

The option to mute though is present in all three games.

Giving and Getting Gifts is Vital

(Lil) Farm Life and Farm Town are similar in that many of the trees and animals cannot be purchased, they can only be gifted. It is unclear why the developers have chosen to do this, other than to get more people to use the gift feature.

This of course is unfair to the farmer who gifts every day but seldom gets a return gift.

Cartoony Graphics

The graphics are a bit more detailed on Farm Life than on Farmville, but both games pale in comparison to Farm Town. (Lil) Farm Life’s graphics are a bit rough in their attempt to make them seem more real and less cartoony. While the plowed plots look like graham crackers on Farmville, they look like wheat crackers in (Lil) Farm Life.

Unlike the other two games, Farm Life is not in beta, which means it is the oldest of the three and is the final version. This is surprising since it would seem that it still needs some work.

Farmers Need Pathways

Though the store offers more in Farm Life than in Farmville, it is still lacking a lot of what Farm Town offers. Neither Farm Life nor Farmville offers pathways, which is a charming aspect of Farm Town. It gives the avatars something to walk on when they race around the farms.

One major advantage that Farm Life and Farm Town has over Farmville is that neither has the extra FV cash that is required to purchase over half the items in the store. Not only are those hard to earn but they’re too easy to spend, so the farmer must be careful to save them and go without needed features, thereby hindering their full enjoyment of that game.

(Lil) Farm Life seems to only have the basic features of a farming game. There is no community other than neighbors to relate to. It’s just a basic game of plowing, seeding, harvesting and purchasing. Like Farmville, it too is hard to earn money quickly.

Farm town is still the best game for me! Although I have already finished the game by reaching the highest level last two weeks ago. I still play it, though I tried farmville, barn buddy and island paradise now. Nothing still compares to Farm town wherein you get to interact with other online users and hire them to help you out on your farm. There's a lot to do while waiting for your crops to be ready. It's still the best for me now. Not unless there would be a game most likely to offer what FT can offer that has the cartoony graphics as Island Paradise, then that would be my new favorite! lol

I have just started playing Lil Farm Life. At the moment I like Farmville better, but I have played it a lot more.
