Personalization on Facebook's Cafe World is one part of the game that allows players to make their cafe show their personality through the use of their inventory items.
Facebook’s Café World players have the option of customizing many options in their café, in order to alter it from its original start of game appearance. In addition, any items purchased and not used are stored in inventory for later use. These options allow players to create cafés and chefs that show off their own personal style. Customization and inventory aren’t directly connected to experience points or buzz ratings. The only items that are necessary to run the café are a stoves, counters, tables and chairs. The building itself needs doors and walls for functionality; however, the other items in the furnishings editor are merely to make the café aesthetically pleasing. The Café World Furnishings Editor The furnishings editor is located at the bottom of the café world page. The various emblems are for different areas that can be edited. Choosing the “chair” icon opens up the furnishings editor. Once this page opens, players can choose from various tables, chairs, doors, windows, floor tiles, wall colors and coverings and miscellaneous decorative items. Some items are locked until various levels of game play are reached while others are limited time only items. Players who wish to customize their café have to make sure they have enough coins to pay for their items. Opening the editor temporarily suspends game play. During this time players can arrange and organize their café by making their selections and placing them in their café wherever they want them to go. In order to maximize game play, it is important to leave room for guests to walk to their seats, otherwise, they will leave without eating and buzz points will decrease. Also, keep in mind that customizing does not increase points or coins. After all choices have been made and the pieces placed in the café where they won’t to go, close the editor by clicking on the big green check mark to the right. This will return players to the game and resume play. Items that are removed from the café are returned to inventory unless they are sold. If they are returned to inventory without s they are indicated by number in the upper right corner of the item. Players can sell the extra items by dragging them to the cash register icon and selecting sell when the dialogue box appears. The selling price will be less than what was paid but it will generate some income if necessary. Avatar Personalization in Café WorldClicking on the chef avatar will open the personalization screen for the chef. Here, players can choose to alter their chef’s appearance. Some choices cost coins while others are free. Again, these choices are purely aesthetic in nature; they don’t increase game experience or points. Customization is a good example of how social games are bringing people together from around the world. Meeting in forums to discuss game play and share tips is just one example of how this phenomenon is allowing people to meet other people around the world.
