Casting fireballs and lightning bolts is fun, but this character class should make full use of its area of effect spells when soloing

Wizards can be one of the most powerful classes in Everquest This character class is one of the hardest classes to play, and players can have a hard time finding pick-up groups. A wizard that knows how and where to level can overcome many of the difficulties involved in reaching the highest levels of the game as a member of this class.

Wizards that reach raidng levels find that this class is highly desired by guilds on raids. Their high burst damage capabilities and a spell that prevents spell damage make sure that the top Everquest guilds always look for good players of wizards.

Starting Out as an Everquest Wizard

A good player should look to websites that can help him. Graffe's Wizard Compendium is a site that has a number of articles that contain useful information to the wizard such as the epic quest information, solo guides, alternate advancement ability guides, and a message board where players can discuss detailed aspects of being a wizard in Norrath.

There are three important things to remember when trying to leveling a wizard up in Everquest. They are as follows:

Wizard Soloing Tactics

Wizards and druids in Everquest have powerful soloing capabilities. The tactic these two classes employ use to solo differs from the soloing tactics used by necromancers and bards. Wizards and druids solo by using a method known as quad kiting. What makes this easier for the pure casters of Everquest is that this class gets an area of effect snare at level 29. Before that level, wizard characters who solo must rely on root nuking, grouping and learning how to use their evacuation spells effectively.

This soloing tactic, known as quad-kiting involves getting four mobs to attack the wizard, using the area effect snare on the group of mobs, and then using area of effect spells to bring the hill the monsters that are part of his quad quite. A wizard should needs two thing to use this tactic effectively. The first thing needed is spell, such as spirit of wolf, or an item, such as Journeyman's Boots, that boosts the wizard's speed. The second thing he needs is an instant cast-item that casts an attack spell when the item is used.

Leveling Up as a Wizard

Wizards can either solo or group to get through the first 20 levels without much difficulty, because the distinctions between the classes in Everquest do not occur until higher levels. It is recommended that that a player does not spend all their time leveling up his wizard up by soloing. It is important for a player of any class to learn what other players expect from a wizard in a group for the higher levels.

Gaining levels as a wizard is more difficult from levels 21 to 28. The monsters start to hit harder and the cloth armor available to the wizard does not protect as well as the heavier armor that non-casting classes can wear. Because the wizard does not have a pet, he must try to escape if things go badly when he is soloing. The important thing to remember is that a wizard character must keep his distance from the monsters he is fighting. Until level 29, assuming that no new snare spells have been added, a wizard must rely on the root spell when soloing.

After a wizard reaches level 29, leveling becomes easier for the Everquest wizard. As long as the charcter has a speed boost and remembered to buy the area of effect snare spell that slows the movement of the recipient, he can quad kite. A careful wizard should level faster than many other Everquest classes.
