Toontown is an interactive online multiplayer game for kids developed by Disney using the Panda game engine. Each player controls a resident of Toontown, known as “Toons”, that they create from a variety of cartoon body parts at the start of the game. Toons can play and interact with each other in a variety of situations, but the adventure really starts in teaming up with other Toons to confront the crotchety Cogs.
Cogs are the villains of the Disney's Toontown Online game. These robots in business suits have no sense of humour, and want to turn the friendly, colorful, fun-filled world of Toonstown into a bland and colorless corporate city. And it is up to the Toons to stop them.
Family Friendly Combat with Toontown Cogs
This being a children's game, the turn-based battles with the Cogs are unlike those of more gory adult-targeted online games. In Toontown, the Toons use cartoon gags such as custard pies, squirting flowers and telling jokes to the Cogs to try to make them laugh. Cogs hate laughter so much, that if they so much as giggle, they will explode.
As a further family friendly departure from traditional online games, Toontown uses a “laugh meter” to gauge the health of a Toon. When the meter is full, the Toon is happy and ready to go adventuring. As the laugh meter decreases, so the Toon becomes sadder. Should the player's laugh meter reach zero during confrontations with the Cogs, the saddened character returns to the playground to perform actions to increase their happiness, such as talking to friends, gardening and playing games.
Things to Do in Toontown Online
After creating a custom Toons character and entering the game, there are many fun activities to do other than trying to make Cogs laugh. These include:
- Exploring the different colorful districts of Toontown.
- Interacting with other Toons using the safe easy-to-use interactive chat menus.
- Racing customized racing Karts.
- Training and playing with a pet Doodle.
Each neighbourhood of Toontown also features its own mini-games, including Boom-A-Toon, ToonTag, Dodge-A-Cog and Tug-of-War. Completing these mini-games rewards a player with jellybeans, the Toontown currency, which can be exchanged in Goofy's Gag Shop to buy gags to use against the Cogs.
