Sony Game Developers Show Game Walkthrough

DC Universe Online Developers gave CES 2009 visitors a glimpse at the game and mission mechanics for their as-yet unscheduled release.

Sony Online Entertainment has previously brought Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) such as Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, and Matrix Online to gaming fans.

Their next big project, DC Universe Online, provides players the opportunity to create a hero or villain and inteact with over 100 characters from the DC Comics universe. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, developers showed a mission in progress and gave a glimpse at the city of Metropolis.

What Developers of DC Universe Online Had to Offer

Previously, trailers and videos for the game have revealed some cool elements: the character customization process, while not shown, is discussed, and the ability for players to chose exactly what sort of hero and what sort of powers they want has been well-received.

In this latest batch of videos, which can be found at GameTrailers.Com (and on YouTube, of course), gamers get to see more than just running around on buildings (thought that is pretty cool), they get to see a mission in action as the developers take their character, a female ninja-esque character, and pit her against LexCorps troops and, in a team-up with Superman, the villain Doomsday.

The animation looks smooth enough, and seem to match the quality of online games of late. Developers offer a glimpse of how characters level up, and progress from being able to lift and throw a car to super-powering themselves up enough to toss a city bus around.

Heard and Not Seen: The Best Parts of SOE's DC Universe Online at CES 2009

Better and more impressive than the visuals is the information given on the game. Unlike other MMORPGs, DC Universe Online will not feature random groups of enemies standing around on street corners, but rather a city that will have heroes and villains of all strengths interacting with one another, forming a more immersive feel for gamers.

Developers revealed that missions will vary in difficulty depending on the character's abilities, level, and the size of the group playing the mission. This means that a player may be wandering down a street and see a higher-level character fighting a massive villain like Doomsday, and will have the option to try and join in, but will not be a target. It also means that those players wishing to take on the missions single-handedly will not necessarily be overrun with villains, and that forming a giant squadron of heroes or villains will not necessarily guarantee victory.

The Last Word on DC Universe Online at CES 2009

The latest batch of videos are definitely worth checking out for DC Comics and online gamers alike. The game has yet to be given a release date, so fans will have to sit tight until more information is released, but from the look of these new videos (and the videos and trailers already released), the game looks like it'll be a best-seller and exactly what comic fans have been waiting for.
