No super hero would be complete without a stylish cape. Even Batman, who gains limited super powers only late in his career, would not be able to strike fear in the hearts of the criminals of Gotham city without his impressive cape. The video game designers who created City of Heroes understood this, but it is something that a player must earn.
While City of Heroes and City of Villains do not have trade skills as it would not fit the genre, it does have quests and badges that can give a player bragging rights. All these badge are fine, but they are nothing until a player earns the right to wear a cape.
As the heading above indicates, an intrepid hero or dastardly villain in Paragon City must set out on a quest to earn his cape. The the quest starts with the hero receiving a mission form a non-player character in Atlas Park. A player earns the right to embark on this quest at level 20.
It may seem like the quest might just be a simple pat on the back from the NPC for fighting villains or heroes in your prior career in Paragon City, but additional acts of virtue or villainy are required before donning this signature piece of super heroic clothing.
The character that wants the cape must then go see a series of NPCs which ends in a simple door mission. Once the door mission is completed successfully, the character now has the right to wear a cape. The initial missions go to Galaxy, Skyway, and Independence Port. The location of the door mission varies, according to the Livejournal City of Heroes forums.
The right to wear a cape shows a certain level of commitment to protecting the citizens from evil, or aiding the criminal organizations that inhabit the City of Heroes world in their quest to thwart the overly moral crusaders who stop them. Even a simple cape is a symbol of status and it shows that the character has embarked on a promising career as a super hero.
If he does really well, someone may even make a comic book about his exploits. Then again, that may be the wrong way to look at the completion of the City of Heroes cape quest. The rewards of villainy are great, and being a hero is its own reward.
