From Dice, the creators of the Battlefield Series, comes a new and innovative free online shooter in the Battlefield series, Battlefield Heroes. Set in World War II, Battlefield Heroes takes a more entertaining look at the cruelties of war by opting for a more cartoonish style of graphics, reminiscent of Team Fortress 2. The best part about it is that it is completely free, thanks to EA's recently designed 'play 4 free' line of games.

The most innovative aspect of the game has nothing to do with the gameplay of the game; rather, it’s the fact that Battlefield Heroes is ‘Play 4 Free.’ Heroes will rely mostly on advertising in between games as well as small amounts from player customizations in order to support their initiative. This will make it more readily accessible to players all over the world, since they won’t need to go to a game store to purchase it.

One of the reasons that Dice decided to change trade more realistic graphics for a cartoon costume was in order to lower the computer specifications necessary to play the game. This will allow more players to be able to enjoy the game without vastly increasing the in-game lag.
Dice’s main objective is to make the game as widely available as possible, releasing it for free and toning down the graphics requirements will mean that a lot of casual gamers will be able to pick up and play, while hard core gamers will be able to customize their players to their hearts content. In order to make the game involving for all different styles of gamers, Battlefield Heroes will also include automatic game matching, dependent upon skill level, to ensure a rich and fulfilling experiences for novices and veterans alike.
What are the Key Features of BattleField Heroes?
Other than the graphics, the gameplay itself will be very similar to the other games in the series, except for the new skill system. While in previous games certain skills were available when using certain equipment, skills such as vehicle repairs, healing, shields, etc., are now linked to character classes and are accessible at the click of a button.
Players can choose from one of three classes, Soldier, Gunner and Commando. Soldier’s balance speed and weapon efficiency, Commando focuses on speed, with a smaller weapon range, and Gunner moves the slowest, but carries guns that can pack the biggest punch.
Players will be able to access tanks, cars and planes, or attempt to gun down enemies using the Nike Express (i.e. their feet). The online deathmatches will allow up to 16 players at a time, and will hopefully increase along with the game’s popularity. The game currently has two maps available in the Beta version, but a new map is being developed, and more will be developed in the future.
Battlefield Heroes Metagame and Online Community
Battlefield Heroes also involves a metagame in which points are awarded to teams for the most territory gained. These points are then tallied at the end of every week in order to determine which team is the winner. The best part as that factions can grow and the Battlefield Heroes site has been created in order to sustain a social community so that players can plan matches, show of their characters and even taunt others (hopefully in a civil manner).
Release Date for Battlefield Heroes
Dice is currently taking sign-ups for the Closed Beta of Battlefield Heroes at the official site. Battlefield Heroes will most likely be available for full release later this year (no official date has been announced yet).
